Mon/Tues 1) Re-Read your assigned section of "Soldier's Home" and analyze: - How is Krebs characterized in your section? - How does Hemingway use syntax and diction to convey Krebs' character? Consider how the structure of the sentences and the word choice contributes to or matches with the character development. 2) Prepare your answer for class on Wednesday. 3) Vocab Squares for the new vocabulary list (AP Tone Words Set 1) are due next Tuesday, 9/6. 1) College Cover Letter assignment - we read an article about what colleges look for in extra-curricular activities and filled out a resume for your own accomplishments and involvement in clubs. We also looked at some sample college letters to see how to write them. 2) Assignment: Draft of your own College Cover letter for Wednesday 3) White Book, pg. 22-25 - discuss diction and syntax, analyze the excerpt on p. 24 and read the sample analytical essay on pg. 25 Wednesday/Thursday 1) Peer Editing of College letter drafts 2) White Book, pg. 26-29 - discuss poetic form, meter, and sound devices. Read poem on pg. 28-9 to analyze for sound devices. Read pg 1-4 and 8-11 in the white textbook. Take notes on "what is literature" and "traits of an effective reader." Wednesday Homework (8/10) 1) Read the "Analysis and Extension" sections (p. 14-16) about the poem "Out, Out - " for a better understanding of what those sections are asking. 2) Read the short story "Snow" by Julia Alvarez on pg. 16-17 and write a an experience and analysis response. This can be two short paragraphs or one long one, about a half-page response total. This will help you practice responding to literature first through experience and then through analysis. We will practice more in class tomorrow. Thursday Homework (8/11) Poetry Response One - Due Friday 8/12 1.5 pg typed response using Experience, Analysis, and Extension to examine the same poem you did in group work today (either "Those Winter Sundays" or "My Papa's Waltz").
